Data Recovery Service Provided by MacFusion. Welcome Phase 4 Customers

It’s sad but true, hard drives fail, people accidentally erase images off camera memory cards, floppies mysteriously die, RAID arrays do fail.

If you’ve lost data for whatever reason, MacFusion can usually retrieve it.

We have the equipment in house to analyse Mac, PC, Linux formatted media, flash disks and memory cards, scan the media for files and recover data bit by bit if necessary.

You only pay on result, if we cannot genuinely recover any data, then there is no charge. So don’t throw away that broken disk, bring it into the store and we’ll happily let you know what can be restored.

Our Recovery Process

  1. BulletFirst a chat to find out when and hopefully how the incident happened. Then an honest discussion and agreement about what is critical in the recovery process.

  2. BulletIf the disk is from a PC, the disk is connected to a PC just to check that the fault is the disk not the owners PC. If data can be retrieved then it is. If the test PC cannot see the disk, or the disk was from a Mac then it’s tested with a Mac, and again if the data is there it’s recovered. If at any time the disk starts to make horrible noises suggesting a mechanical issue the device is immediately switched off and it’s connected to a machine that will make a bit by bit copy of the drive, this can take up to 24 hours but results in a new drive to attempt to recover data from.

  3. BulletIf by now the drive has failed all the above checks, a much more intensive scanning process is invoked. Typical scan times for a 250GB drive range from 8 hours to 120 hours plus. The more damage, the longer the process takes. Once the scanning machine has completed a run, then a snapshot of recoverable data and probability of success is created. This is the template for subsequent file recovery. All files recovered are copied to a disk of similar capacity to the original unit.

  4. BulletIf none of the above works, or on initial inspection it is identified that the disk motor (it is a mechanical device after all) is not running, then a replacement logic board is sourced. This can take up to 2 weeks. If the source is successful, the new logic board is fitted, and if the hard drive now spins up the recovery process starts again.

  5. BulletIf however, the disk does not spin, then that’s as far as we can go, the disk would have to be sent to a specialist data recovery lab, and fee’s climb significantly. There is usually an inspection fee ranging from £400 to £800. The results of the inspection produce a table of recoverable data and the owner makes a conscious decision to stop or proceed. If the go ahead is given expect a final additional bill which can range from several hundred pounds to several thousand.
